It is a constant struggle to ensure we have donors to support our organization so we continually look for ways to become self sufficient. We currently run a bicycle sale and repair shop as well as provide photocopying services. We look for new ways to generate income and welcome ideas and input from all over the world.
For our bicycle workshop we receive second-hand bicycles donated through Bicycles for Humanity and a local partner, Bicycle Empowerment Network Namibia (BEN). The bikes are shipped over to Namibia (often from Canada) and then we refurbish them as our mechanics were taught to do by BEN. We then sell the bikes and spare parts to the local community. This helps provide money for our much needed transport as most of the people who work for us can not afford daily taxi fares to come to the Centre and are too far away to walk. The workshop is operated out of modified containers.
FHS is thankful for the support received from the St. Bartholomew congregation in Canada and their partners who have always assisted in gathering the bicycles. With all of this added support, we have managed to help our children in a number of emergency situations.
The children benefit by:
–Learning how to ride a bike and the rules of the road.
–Older students who travel far to school are given a bike.
–Profits help pay for educational support for unsponsored children in urgent need of support .
–Profits help support our feeding program by paying for the cooking gas
